Eight killed in Sunyani-Berekum road crash

We are deeply saddened to report on a tragic accident that occurred on the Sunyani-Berekum highway, resulting in the loss of at least eight lives, including mourners. The incident, which took place on Saturday, 2nd November, involved a total of 10 individuals and has left a community in mourning.

The accident involved a Toyota Corolla taxicab and a private vehicle belonging to the Great Wall School. The taxicab was transporting four passengers from Sunyani towards Berekum, while the private car was also loaded with four mourners traveling from Dormaa-Ahenkro to Sunyani.

According to reports, the driver of the Great Wall private vehicle lost control of the steering wheel, crossing into the lane of the taxicab and causing the tragic accident at Amanfoso around 2:30 p.m.

The victims were immediately rushed to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital and the Sunyani Teaching Hospital for medical attention. However, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has confirmed that all eight occupants in the two vehicles succumbed to their injuries due to the severe impact of the accident.

Gabriel Kwame Okyere, the Bono Regional public relations officer (PRO) of the NRSA, provided further details, stating that the taxi cab crashed into the passenger side of the private vehicle, resulting in deadly injuries for all occupants.

Tragically, seven victims who were rushed to Sunyani Teaching Hospital for medical treatment were confirmed dead by the attending medical officer, Dr. Kofi Kusi Philemon. Additionally, one of the three victims taken to Berekum Holy Family Hospital for medical treatment also passed away while on admission.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the respective hospital mortuaries for identification, preservation, and autopsy. Furthermore, both vehicles involved in the accident have been towed to the police station as part of ongoing investigations.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this incredibly difficult time. We also urge all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
