Mahama Seeks Asantehene's Support to Tackle Ghana's Economic Crisis

President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his support in addressing Ghana's current economic challenges.  During a visit to the Manhyia Palace on January 19th,  Mahama acknowledged the Asantehene's crucial role in navigating past economic difficulties during his previous presidency (2013-2017).

Mahama highlighted the severity of the current economic crisis, characterized by high inflation, macroeconomic instability, currency depreciation, and a debt default that has limited access to international credit markets. He described this as the most daunting economic challenge Ghana has faced.  He recalled the Asantehene's instrumental role in overcoming similar hurdles during his earlier term, emphasizing the invaluable assistance provided by the traditional leader in fostering economic stability and growth.  He explicitly stated his intention to continue seeking the Asantehene's guidance and support in navigating the present crisis.

In response, the Asantehene, represented by Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, Paramount Chief of the Mampong Traditional Area, urged President Mahama to remain faithful to his promises to the Ghanaian people, particularly concerning ongoing development projects within the Ashanti Kingdom.  The Asantehene expressed confidence in the President's ability to deliver on these commitments.

The meeting underscores the significant influence of traditional leaders in Ghana's political and economic landscape and highlights the collaborative approach being adopted to tackle the nation's economic woes.  The Asantehene's support is seen as potentially crucial in fostering national unity and facilitating the implementation of economic recovery strategies.
