Greater Accra Regional Council of State Election Underway

Voting is currently underway at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Hall for the Greater Accra Regional Council of State election.  Fifty-eight delegates are casting their ballots to choose a representative for the region.  The process, overseen by the Electoral Commission (EC), is reportedly proceeding smoothly, according to Greater Accra Regional Director Mrs. Gladys Pinkrah.

Thirteen candidates are vying for the position: Afotey-Agbo Joseph Nii Laryea, Summertime Kwabillna Ampong, Sampson Seyram Kwadzo Agbemabiese, Horvey Charles Yaw, Redeemer Worwui, Joseph Tetten Sottie, Annan Helbert Nii Aryee, Musah Ziyad, Samuel Duah, Albert Borketey Naawu, Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey (I), Edmund Siaw Akugbey, and Obed Nyarko.

The Council of State, established under Articles 89 to 92 of Ghana's 1992 Constitution, serves as an advisory body to the President.  Its members provide counsel on presidential duties.  The Council's composition includes: a former Chief Justice, a former Chief of the Defence Staff, a former Inspector-General of Police (all appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament); the President of the National House of Chiefs; one elected representative from each region; and eleven other presidential appointees.

The Council elects its own chairman and serves for the duration of the President's term, unless a member resigns, becomes incapacitated, or is removed for misconduct or inability to perform duties (with presidential approval and parliamentary consent).  Key responsibilities include advising the President on parliamentary bills and participating in crucial appointments as mandated by the Constitution or other laws.

Polling began at 7:00 AM and is scheduled to conclude at 5:00 PM today. The Electoral Commission will announce the results later in the day.
