Mahama Promises to Restore Republic Day and Introduce Eid al-Fitr Holiday

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to reinstate Republic Day as a national holiday and introduce a new public holiday for Eid al-Fitr.  The announcement was made during his thank-you tour of the Western Region on Wednesday, February 5th.

Mahama's administration intends to amend the Public Holidays Act to restore July 1st as a public holiday, marking Ghana's transition to self-governance. This move reverses a 2019 amendment by former President Nana Akufo-Addo which removed Republic Day from the list of national holidays.

In addition to restoring Republic Day, Mahama pledged to fulfill a campaign promise to the Muslim community by establishing an official holiday for Eid al-Fitr.  This will provide an additional day of celebration for the Muslim population in Ghana.

Further solidifying his commitment to national unity and reflection, Mahama proposed the creation of a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.  He suggested holding this day on July 1st, coinciding with both Republic Day and Senior Citizens' Day. This would allow for a combined celebration reflecting on Ghana's progress and seeking divine guidance.  A planning committee composed of religious leaders will be formed to oversee the arrangements for this new national observance.

The President emphasized his dedication to fulfilling his campaign promises, assuring Ghanaians that tangible development would soon be seen across the country.  He expressed gratitude to the people of the Western Region for their support and reiterated his commitment to honoring their trust.  The proposed amendments to the Public Holidays Act will be presented to Parliament for consideration and approval.
