The police have warned the public that as part of the 59th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), security measures will be put in place for a successful event.
Already, some West African leaders have started arriving for the event, which is slated for Saturday and Sunday at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
A news release issued by the police on Friday, June 18 said there will be closure and diversion of roads leading to the venue.
“All dignitaries attending the meeting will be provided maximum security.
“Designated lodging places including meeting areas would also be protected by security personnel.
“The general public is therefore advised to stay off the immediate vicinity of the AICC and the State House Complex on Saturday 19th June 2021.”
According to the statement, signed by Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, both overt and covert operations in the surrounding communities will be activated.
The roads from the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) through the Liberation Road, Independence Avenue, the National Theatre leading to the venue will be closed or diverted at some points during the day.
“Motorists are therefore advised to take alternative routes.”
It said the presence of security personnel will increase in Accra with some stationed at the points of road closure or diversion to direct motorists.
“The general public is entreated to note these arrangements and cooperate with the police and all other security officials for a successful hosting of the 59th Ordinary Session of the Ecowas by our dear country.”
