I won because I believe in justice and Ghana. – Gyakye Quayson

James Gyakye Quayson, the victor in the Assin North by-election, has devoted his triumph to his supporters, the Ghanaian people, and to justice.

In his acceptance speech following a fiercely contested by-election, Mr. Quayson hinted that he is dedicated to serving the residents of Assin North and that his victory is a victory over injustice. He also reassured the populace that he will work to advance justice in the future.

This is a victory not just for me but for the people of Ghana. Hopefully one day we will pursue a good direction of justice and also to realize that politics is not about giving money to people to get a vote. "I stood for justice and development and I still haven't swayed. I will continue to pursue the same agenda because that is the mandate Assin North has given me."

The candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly distributing money in exchange for votes, saying that this deprives vulnerable communities of the development they need and undermines democracy.

"Democracy is about growth, and we are going to push this trend along to ensure that those who are represented have a fair portion of the national cake and how to build their neighborhoods."

At a recent campaign rally in the district, Mr. Quayson further criticized President Akufo-Addo for having found him guilty in the current criminal case against him.

"I was a little upset to hear that from a president who is a lawyer, but the wonderful people of Assin North have shown that they have a conscience and they believe in me and I have a vision to execute," the president said.

Mr. Quayson defeated Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana with 17,245 votes, or 57.56 percent of the total valid votes cast (LPG).

In the fiercely contested by-election, Charles Opoku received 12,630 votes, or 42.15 percent of the total votes cast, while Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the LPG received a pitiful 87 votes, or 0.29 percent.

In 2020, Gyakye Quayson won the seat by 17,498 votes. However, he was expelled from Parliament for having dual nationality before submitting his nomination forms.
