Ghana Card requires cylinder recirculation model – NPA

The National Petroleum Authority's (NPA) Mohammed Abdul-Kudus, who oversees communications, has clarified the prerequisites for people and families to take part in the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) Programme, which will launch in September of this year.

He noted that, in contrast to earlier assumptions, more than one national identity (ID) card is required for registration, not just the Ghana card.

Abdul-Kudus said that although the Ghana card is one of the accepted ID cards, other kinds of identification would also be utilized during the registration process in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM in Accra on Monday.

"It was just mentioned among other things as a part of the implementation process. Currently, the system is set up so that each person or household has their own cylinder. You take your cylinder to a fuel station, fill it up, and then return it. CRM is giving the bulk filling business ownership and maintenance of the cylinders. Cylinders won't be owned by people or households any longer. As a result, it will be the duty of the bulk filling businesses to acquire the cylinders and integrate them into the system.

How can successful implementation be ensured? There, people who will participate in the program and those who will register for it will do so. Also, a national ID will be required. No other ID card is prohibited from being used, though. It is completely untrue that that particular story about the Ghana card or anything else, he said.

The CRM's primary goals are to improve safety standards in the handling and distribution of cylinders and to streamline the distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Under the new approach, people or households will bring their cylinders to specific fuel stations to be filled, then return the cylinders to the bulk filling businesses to be used again.

Filled LPG cylinders would be maintained at exchange locations for consumers to pay for the content and pick up the filled cylinders after registering with their National Identification Card, according to Perry Okudzeto, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Authority.

He stated that the NPA and its partners would lead the implementation of the CRM under the direction of the Ministry of Energy.
