Rejecting a law student’s call to bar on the basis of a social media account is illegal and unfair– Sosu

Francis Xavier Sosu, a human rights attorney, has referred to it as discriminatory to reject a law student who has passed a call to the bar.

Chief Justice Torkornoo gave her reasons for why the General Legal Council rejected the call to the bar for one of the social media influencers called Ama Governor, even though she had passed the exam.

A petition against Ms. Ababio's behavior was submitted to the General Legal Council last year, which resulted in a temporary suspension of her eligibility to be admitted to the bar.

Speaking on Monday at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration's (GIMPA) 7th annual legal ethics training program, Justice Torkornoo expressed concern over what she called a segment of the public's "fury" over their judgment.

The lawmaker  for Medina, Joshua Kodjo Mensah, argued that the General Legal Council's action was unfair.

"When you ask my opinion regarding this matter, I believe the Legal Council is acting unlawfully and unfairly toward this student. If I were this student, I would have filed a lawsuit to contest this. notwithstanding the fact that there is a difficulty. It is the cause of some of us advocating for a review of the General Legal Council's statutes and other legislation. because the General Legal Council's Chairman, the Chief Justice, is making this opinion.

"She is the one making this decision if she chairs the General Legal Council and has direct oversight responsibilities over legal education. The congressman questioned, "How can you achieve justice in this kind of situation when the Chief Justice would be the one to choose the judges if you appeal this decision in court?

The student was further encouraged by the human rights attorney to take the case to court and fight for her rights.
