EC not above criticism – Jean Mensa

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has expressed its willingness to embrace public scrutiny and criticism of its work as the nation prepares for a crucial election in 2024. However, the EC emphasizes that such scrutiny should be conducted with objectivity and candor to ensure national peace, security, and the sustenance of the country's democracy.

Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC, made these remarks during her keynote address at the 27th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards held at the Accra International Conference Centre. The theme of the event was "Leveraging Media Freedom to Sustain the Democratic and Security Architecture: The Litmus Test of Election 2024."

The Role of Stakeholders

Acknowledging the high stakes involved in the upcoming election, Mrs. Mensa emphasized that it could either make or break the peace and security of Ghana. She urged all stakeholders, including journalists, to prioritize the nation's interests above political affiliations and work together to ensure that their actions and activities benefit the country as a whole.

Responsible Journalism

Addressing the journalists in attendance, Mrs. Mensa highlighted their crucial role in building and sustaining the nation's resilience. As the ears, eyes, and hearts of the citizens, journalists have the power to shape public opinion and influence outcomes. Therefore, she stressed the importance of practicing responsible journalism and upholding the truth at all times.

Mrs. Mensa expressed her appreciation for the media's pioneering role in shaping and shepherding Ghana's democracy over the years. However, she also chastised some media outlets for becoming vehicles of propaganda, spreading falsehoods, and misinformation that polarize the citizenry along political party lines. She called on the media to promote transparency, truth, and accuracy, as they are the guardians of transparency and the vanguard for freedom.

In light of this, Mrs. Mensa urged the National Media Commission to ensure strict adherence to media ethics and set standards that promote truth and respect. She emphasized the need to hold accountable those who flout the rules and regulations. Additionally, she encouraged citizens to be discerning and demand the truth from the media, as they have the power to shape public opinion and influence outcomes.

The Power of the Pen

In conclusion, Mrs. Mensa reminded everyone that the power of the pen is unmatched. Therefore, journalists must engage in thorough fact-checking to avoid misinforming the public. The 27th GJA Awards recognized exceptional reporting and excellent work by journalists and media organizations, with Mr. Erasmus Asare Donkor being crowned Journalist of the Year.

In a crucial election year like 2024, it is imperative that all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and the media, work together to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. By upholding objectivity, candor, and responsible journalism, Ghana can safeguard its democracy, peace, and harmony for the benefit of its citizens.
