Mahama demands desilting of Lower Volta Basin

Former president John Dramani Mahama has demanded that the Lower Volta Basin, in especially the estuary at Ada, be desilted immediately.

He said that the exercise had not been done for some time and blamed the lack of activity on a decrease in the amount of water flowing into the sea from the Volta River.

Addressing to reporters on Friday, October 13, after touring flood-affected areas in the Volta Region, the former president Mahama said the situation had worsened due to the Volta River Authority's (VRA) spilling of extra water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) was therefore urged by the former president Mahama to act quickly to provide the communities affected by the Akosombo Dam leak with relief supplies as well as additional security measures to protect people and property.

He claimed that given the reality on the ground, the situation downstream of the dams was so perilous that it was no longer rumor.

He made the decision while touring some of the impacted neighborhoods in the Volta Region's South, North, and Central Tongu districts.

He expressed disappointment over NADMO's lack of support because the government had not provided the organization with the resources it needed to provide the necessary help in times of need.

Thus, he requested assistance from the government for the impacted populations.

The VRA was appreciated by Mr. Mahama for helping the impacted communities.

The South Tongu MP Kobina Mensah Woyome, the Central Tongu MP Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze, the Ketu South MP Dzifa Abla Gomashie, the North Dayi MP Joycelyn Tetteh, the Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah, and the Volta Region Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mawutor Agbavitor, were with the former president.
