NPP flagbearer aspirants pledge to stay in the party even if they do not win the primary

Commitment Details

Four aspirants vying for the flagbearer position in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have made a commitment not to resign from the party if they are unsuccessful in the upcoming primary election. This agreement was reached during a meeting between the National Council of Elders and the aspirants.

Justin Frimpong Koduah, the General Secretary of the party, addressed the press after the meeting and shared the details of the undertaking. He stated that all four aspirants have agreed to accept the results of the primary and prioritize the interests of the party.

"The four aspirants have signed an undertaking to accept the primary results, promote peace and cohesion, and support the winner of the primary," said Koduah.

In addition to this commitment, the aspirants have also agreed to adhere to the mechanisms established by the party and work within the designated timelines until the results are declared. They have pledged to respect the decision of the party delegates.

Concerns Addressed

The Chairman of the Council of Elders, at the beginning of the meeting, expressed concern about the current state of disunity within the party. He attributed this disunity to the self-centered interests of certain individuals. He acknowledged that debates and disagreements have arisen during the race for the flagbearer position, both within the party and among supporters of the presidential candidates. However, he urged all presidential aspirants to avoid divisiveness and remain united following Saturday's presidential primary.

Frontrunners in Primary Election

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is considered a frontrunner in Saturday's primary election. His closest competitor is Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central. The other two candidates vying for the flagbearer position are former Minister for Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh.

Significance of Undertaking

The signing of this undertaking by all four aspirants signifies a commitment to unity and loyalty to the party. It is a positive step towards fostering a cohesive and harmonious environment within the NPP. As party members eagerly await Saturday's primary, it is hoped that this spirit of cooperation will continue beyond the election, regardless of the outcome.
