Government Takes Action Against Illegal Miners Damaging Kumasi-Accra Highway Bypasses

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the issue of illegal small-scale miners, commonly known as Galamseyers, who are causing damage to the bypasses being constructed on the Kumasi-Accra Highway.

During an inspection of the ongoing project on Wednesday, 3 January 2024, the Minister expressed concern over the detrimental impact of Galamsey activities on the sections of the bypasses. He noted that these activities were significantly deteriorating the areas that had already been worked on, posing a threat to the progress of the construction.

"A lot of the sections that had been worked on already are so much deteriorated by galamsey activities. At one of the stretches at the Osino bypass, the contractors continue to encounter galamseyers, but we have a way of dealing with them," the Minister stated.

Assuring unwavering support to the contractors, he affirmed, "I want to assure the contractors that the government stands solidly behind them, and as much as possible, we will continue to make resources available to them because this is a mega project being carried out by the government, and I believe that it will not stall."

The bypasses, including the 11.6km Osino bypass, the 6.1km Anyinam bypass, the 10.6km Enyiresi bypass, and the 13.5km Konogo bypass, are integral components of the government's ongoing efforts to dualize the Accra-Kumasi highway. This initiative aims to alleviate vehicular traffic congestion, reduce accidents, and facilitate the seamless movement of goods and people.

The Minister highlighted that significant progress has been made by the contractors, with completed tasks including the clearing of road alignment and advancements in the construction of culverts, bridges, box culverts, pipe culverts, and earthworks.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the overall progress of the work. The government remains resolute in its determination to combat illegal mining activities that pose a threat to critical infrastructure projects. By addressing these challenges, the government is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the highway bypasses, ultimately contributing to improved transportation and safety for all citizens.
