Former President Mahama has restated his commitment to re-evaluating the free Senior High School (SHS) programme. He emphasized the need to address the implementation challenges currently being experienced as a matter of urgency.
Mr. Mahama pointed out the strain placed on teachers as a result of the policy, citing the previous trimester system where teachers had designated breaks for marking papers, rest, and curriculum preparation. He highlighted that the current system has disrupted the teachers' ability to effectively manage their workload.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with representatives of labour unions at the Great Hall of the KNUST in Kumasi, the flagbearer of the NDC expressed his determination to engage stakeholders in a review of the policy. He clarified that this does not necessarily mean cancellation, but rather a collaborative effort to resolve the existing challenges.
Mr. Mahama also acknowledged the reluctance of individuals to openly express their concerns due to potential repercussions. He assured that a new independent platform for teachers would be established if the NDC is successful in the upcoming election, allowing them to freely voice their opinions without fear of consequences.
