GJA president warns against attacks on journalists

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rights and freedoms of journalists across the nation.

In a recent statement, Albert Dwumfuor, the President of the Association, emphasized the GJA's dedication to addressing any acts of aggression against journalists. During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mr. Dwumfuor expressed the Association's unwavering stance on instructing its members to blacklist any individual who poses a threat to journalists in the country.

This position was taken in collaboration with the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA). Together, they issued a directive urging media organizations nationwide to blacklist Farouk Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Yendi, following his reported assault on Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, a Northern Regional Reporter for Citi News.

The incident occurred while Alabira was covering the disruption of the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primary in the Yendi constituency on January 27, 2024. Mr. Dwumfuor stressed the importance of sending a clear signal and caution to those who seek to undermine press freedom and media independence, stating, "We will not entertain such acts. This is the way to go. We want to send a signal, a caution that we are not going to relax on our call for our members to blacklist politicians, individuals, or groups who rise against journalists."

The GJA's resolute stance serves as a testament to its ongoing efforts to safeguard the welfare and rights of journalists, and underscores the critical importance of ensuring a free and unimpeded press in Ghana.
