A fun-filled afternoon at the Amponsah Dam in Bibiani Zongo, Western North Region, Ghana, took a tragic turn when 19-year-old Elisha Akanlawen, a Senior High School (SHS) 2 student, drowned while swimming with friends. The incident, recounted by Zongo Electoral Area Assembly Member Mohammed Abdallah to Adom News, highlights a recurring danger at the dam and underscores the need for preventative measures.
Elisha, described as an inexperienced swimmer, ventured into deeper waters with his friends. He quickly struggled and despite efforts from those present, rescue attempts proved unsuccessful. The police and community leaders were summoned to the scene, where traditional rituals were performed before the retrieval of his body. Elisha's body was subsequently transported to the Bibiani Government Hospital mortuary.
This is not an isolated incident; Mr. Abdallah revealed that the Amponsah Dam has been the site of previous drowning tragedies. He strongly advocates for the construction of a fence around the dam to prevent future accidents. Despite previous attempts to bring this issue to the attention of the authorities, no action has been taken. Mr. Abdallah’s heartfelt appeal for assistance underscores the urgent need for intervention to prevent further loss of life. The community's plea for a fence serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures around bodies of water, especially those frequented by young people.
