Tension in New Juaben as Police break into royal stool room, detain family members

Tension has escalated in the New Juaben traditional area following a recent incident involving the Adwampong royal family in Koforidua. Reports indicate that a group, purportedly led by the New Juaben divisional police commander, forcibly entered the stool room of the Adwampong royal family, sparking a confrontation.

The altercation arose when the queen mother of the Adwampong royal family resisted the unauthorized removal of the black stool, a crucial element for the upcoming enstoolment ceremony of a new Chief for the family. The ceremony, scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 1, at the Yiadom Hwedie Palace, is to be presided over by Daasebere Kwaku Boateng III.

Nana Akosua Afrakoma, the Queen mother who has been in charge of the stool for 29 years, expressed her opposition to the enstoolment of a Chief who, according to her, has not been nominated by her. She voiced her disappointment at the conduct of the district police and called on the Regional Security Council and National Security Minister to intervene in order to prevent potential conflict.

The situation took a concerning turn when the son and daughter of the Queen mother, who were invited by Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Baah to make a formal complaint, were reportedly detained upon reaching the Koforidua Central police station.

The gravity of this situation cannot be understated, and it is imperative that all parties involved approach this matter with utmost sensitivity and respect for tradition. The need for a peaceful resolution and adherence to due process is paramount in ensuring the well-being and stability of the community.

As developments unfold, it is essential for all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and seek amicable solutions that uphold the dignity and rights of the parties involved. The significance of traditional customs and the rule of law should guide efforts towards resolving this delicate situation.

It is our hope that through concerted efforts and a commitment to peaceful resolution, the New Juaben traditional area can emerge from this challenging episode with its social fabric strengthened and its traditions respected.
