Understanding Mobile Money Deposits and Transfers: Clarifications from the Chamber of Telecommunications CEO

In a recent interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Telecommunications, addressed concerns regarding charges associated with depositing money into Mobile Money (MoMo) accounts. He emphatically stated that there are no charges for depositing money into one's MoMo account.

This statement comes in response to reported cases of some MoMo agents allegedly imposing deposit fees. Dr. Ashigbey urged individuals who have been subjected to such fees to promptly report the agent to their respective mobile networks or law enforcement. He emphasized that there should be no charge for depositing money into one's account.

Furthermore, Dr. Ashigbey clarified the issue of charges for money transfers between MoMo wallets and bank accounts. He explained that if both the bank account and the mobile money account are linked to the same Ghana card used during registration, the system recognizes it as a self-transfer, and no charges should apply.

Acknowledging instances of technical glitches during the Christmas holidays, Dr. Ashigbey advised individuals facing issues with improper synchronization between bank and mobile money sides to report them to their banks or MoMo service providers. He stressed that despite these technical challenges, the law explicitly states that transfers between oneself, whether across different wallets or into different bank accounts, should not incur any charges.

"It was something that over the Christmas holidays we were dealing with to make sure that the dealings were aligned. So if you have a situation like that, you should report it to your bank or your MoMo company," he added.

In conclusion, Dr. Ashigbey reiterated that the law is very specific and transfers between oneself on different wallets or into different bank accounts are not supposed to attract any charge at all.

It is important for MoMo users to be aware of their rights and to report any instances of unauthorized fees to the appropriate authorities. The Chamber of Telecommunications continues to work towards ensuring transparency and fairness within the mobile money ecosystem.

As always, it is advisable for individuals to stay informed about the regulations governing mobile money services and to seek clarification from official sources in case of any doubts or concerns.
