The 80-acre land that was once home to onion sellers at Agbogbloshie in Accra has unfortunately become a site for open defecation and an unauthorised dumpsite. This is a far cry from the intended purpose of the land, which was reclaimed in 2021 by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) with the aim of future development.
Despite efforts to secure the land by fencing it off, the area has fallen into disarray, with piles of solid waste and smoke engulfing the once vibrant settlement. The Old Fadama Clinic, located on the same land, has also been exposed to a wide range of pollutants, posing significant health risks to both workers and patients.
The responsibility for protecting the land falls on the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, the local authority with territorial jurisdiction. However, the Chief Executive of the Assembly, Mariama Karley Amui, has not provided any comments on the matter, leaving the situation unaddressed.
The relocation of the traders was a significant step taken by the GARCC as part of its "Let’s Make Accra Work" initiative. However, despite promises of future development and the allocation of a portion of the land for a modern health facility under the Agenda 111 initiative, no tangible progress has been made. This has left both residents and traders disillusioned and disappointed.
The lack of development in the reclaimed land has not only led to environmental degradation but has also impacted the livelihoods of those who were relocated. The promises of improved infrastructure and amenities at their new trading center have not been fulfilled, leading to a sense of neglect and abandonment.
It is evident that the current state of the reclaimed land at Agbogbloshie is a cause for concern. The failure to follow through on plans for development and the lack of enforcement to prevent illegal activities on the land have resulted in a deteriorating situation.
It is imperative for the relevant authorities to take swift action to address these issues and uphold their commitment to the well-being of the community. The potential for positive transformation and development of the land must not be squandered, and steps need to be taken to rectify the current state of neglect.
The plight of the Agbogbloshie community serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible urban planning and sustainable development. It is crucial for all stakeholders to work together towards creating a safe, healthy, and thriving environment for all.
