We’ll not support EC’s proposal to change election date – Mahama

In a recent address at the Minority caucus meeting in Ho, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, expressed the party's firm opposition to the proposal for a change in the date for the 2024 elections from December to November. Mahama emphasized that the NDC does not believe that this proposed change is being made in good faith.

Mahama went on to assert that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is anticipating a clear defeat and is attempting to undermine the credibility of the elections. He pointed to the sudden interest by the Electoral Commission in shifting the election date as evidence of this, particularly in light of what he described as a lack of readiness demonstrated by the Commission in conducting general elections.

The former president highlighted what he perceives as clear indications of an impending victory for the NDC in the 2024 elections, signaling a rejection of the current government by the people of Ghana due to what he described as poor governance, corruption, maladministration, nepotism, incompetence, and wasteful use of state resources.

Mahama also addressed the issue of continuous registration, demanding that the process include mechanisms for all political parties and relevant stakeholders to monitor the exercise in real time to prevent fraud and exploitation.

He commended the Minority in Parliament for their efforts to check the perceived excesses of the current government and reminded them of their responsibility as the last line of defense against poor governance.

Touching on various policy matters, Mahama outlined his vision for an improved economy and cautioned against what he views as the politicization of the Ghana Card, emphasizing the need for its full integration into the lives of Ghanaians before any exclusion of other forms of identification is implemented.

In conclusion, Mahama criticized the current government's economic management and expressed confidence in his proposed policies to improve living conditions and bring about sustained prosperity for all citizens.

The address by John Dramani Mahama underscores the heightened political tensions as Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections and sets the stage for continued debate and engagement on critical issues facing the nation.
