Driver’s Licence extension: Bawumia baiting us for votes – Transport operators

In a recent development, the Transport Operators of Ghana have raised concerns regarding the pledge made by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to extend the renewal period for driver’s licenses from two years to 10 years.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 13, the group expressed skepticism towards Bawumia's pledge, describing it as a ploy to garner votes from drivers without addressing their actual concerns. They pointed out that Bawumia has previously demonstrated a lack of genuine concern for the welfare of drivers.

The current legislation mandates that driver’s license holders must renew their licenses every two years, as directed by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). However, Bawumia believes that this requirement is burdensome for drivers and has proposed an extension to provide relief.

The transport operators highlighted several pressing issues that they believe should take precedence over the proposed license renewal extension. These include the taxes imposed on petroleum products by the government, the high cost of acquiring driving licenses and roadworthy certificates, as well as unfulfilled pledges made by Bawumia's administration.

They called upon Bawumia to prioritize addressing these existing challenges before making new pledges, emphasizing the need for tangible actions to alleviate the burdens faced by drivers.

As the 2024 elections approach, the transport operators urged drivers to remain vigilant and not be swayed by promises that may not materialize. They emphasized the importance of holding political leaders accountable for their commitments and ensuring that the welfare of drivers is genuinely prioritized.

The statement from the Transport Operators of Ghana serves as a reminder of the critical issues facing drivers in the country and underscores the need for substantive action to address these challenges. It also highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in political pledges and promises.

As discussions around the renewal of driver’s licenses continue, it is imperative for policymakers to engage with stakeholders and consider the broader context of challenges faced by drivers in Ghana. Only through meaningful dialogue and concrete measures can the concerns raised by the transport operators and drivers be effectively addressed.
