Akufo-Addo orders police and military deployment to crackdown on galamsey

In response to the escalating crisis of illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, President Akufo Addo has taken decisive action by ordering the deployment of the police and the military. This significant move comes after a national security meeting to assess the detrimental impact of galamsey on river bodies and the environment.

The urgency of the situation has been further underscored by Organised Labour, which has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening a nationwide strike by the end of September if meaningful steps are not taken to address the galamsey crisis. This sentiment has been echoed by various groups, including religious leaders, reflecting the widespread concern and demand for immediate intervention.

Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands And Natural Resources, revealed that the President has also directed the decommissioning of illegal mining equipment if necessary. He emphasized that the Regional Security Councils have been tasked to conduct thorough assessments of their respective areas and initiate targeted enforcement actions, including swoops to curb illegal mining activities. The involvement of the Ghana Armed Forces has not been ruled out, indicating the seriousness with which the government is approaching this issue.

The gravity of the situation became evident when the Ghana Water Company Limited in the Central Region announced potential challenges with water supply in certain areas due to inadequate raw water caused by galamsey activities. This development has sparked widespread frustration among environmental groups, civil society organisations, and concerned citizens who are deeply troubled by the lack of substantial progress in addressing the devastating consequences of galamsey. These consequences include river contamination, destruction of farmlands, and the loss of livelihoods for many Ghanaians.

As the government takes proactive measures to combat illegal small-scale mining, it is evident that a coordinated and resolute effort is required from all stakeholders to effectively tackle this pressing issue. The enforcement of regulations and the dismantling of illegal mining operations are crucial steps towards safeguarding the environment and preserving the well-being of communities affected by galamsey.

It is imperative for all sectors of society to support these efforts and work collaboratively towards sustainable solutions that will mitigate the adverse effects of illegal mining activities. The preservation of natural resources and the protection of livelihoods depend on concerted action and unwavering commitment to combat galamsey.
