GAF to collaborate with small-scale miners to combat galamsey – Fatimatu Abubakar

In a recent statement released by Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar, the government has announced its plans to intensify the ongoing Operation Halt in a bid to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

According to Fatimatu Abubakar, the operation will be spearheaded by the Ghana Armed Forces in collaboration with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana, with a primary focus on driving illegal miners away from Ghana's river bodies to prevent further pollution.

This move comes in the wake of calls from various organizations and individuals, including Organised Labour, urging the government to repeal LI 2462, a legislative instrument that allows for gold prospecting in forest reserves, and to impose a ban on all forms of mining along river bodies. In response to the government's failure to meet these demands, Organised Labour has declared an indefinite strike action effective Thursday, October 10.

In a show of solidarity with Organised Labour's strike, the Media Coalition Against Galamsey has called upon Ghanaians to wear red armbands as a form of protest against the government's perceived inaction.

Fatimatu's statement reiterated that both river bodies and forest reserves are considered red zones, emphasizing the government's commitment to protecting these vital natural resources.

Operation Halt was initially launched to address the issue of illegal mining in forest reserves and water bodies, and the government's decision to intensify this operation reflects its continued dedication to tackling the challenges posed by galamsey.

As the government takes proactive measures to combat illegal mining, it is imperative for all stakeholders to work together towards sustainable and responsible mining practices that safeguard the environment and natural resources for future generations.
