We regret to report a tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the Sokoban Wood Village in Kumasi. A one-story building collapsed, resulting in one fatality and three individuals being rescued.
Upon receiving the distress call at 2:45 a.m., the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) promptly dispatched its Kejetia Fire crew to the scene. The team found four workers trapped beneath the rubble and swiftly initiated a coordinated rescue operation, successfully extricating three individuals. Regrettably, one person was found deceased at the site.
The GNFS retrieved the body of the deceased and handed it over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further investigation. In light of this incident, the GNFS emphasized the critical importance of adhering to safety standards at construction sites, underscoring the pivotal role of emergency responders in preserving lives.
While expressing gratitude that three lives were saved due to the swift response of the rescue team, the GNFS also highlighted the imperative for all construction projects to comply with safety protocols to avert similar tragedies in the future.
Investigations into the cause of the building collapse are currently underway. Our thoughts are with the affected individuals and their families during this difficult time. We urge all stakeholders involved in construction activities to prioritize safety measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
