NMC to launch app to combat misinformation

The National Media Commission (NMC) is taking proactive steps to address misinformation and disinformation in the lead-up to the general elections. In a recent announcement, the NMC revealed its plans to launch a media watch app designed to combat the spread of false information and promote transparency during the electoral process.

The primary goal of this initiative is to empower both journalists and citizens to report real-time suspicious activities occurring at polling stations, allowing for swift and decisive action to be taken. By providing a platform for the capture and dissemination of accurate information, the app aims to contribute to the peaceful conduct of elections and ensure the safety of journalists operating in potentially volatile environments.

During a forum organized by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) on the theme “Moderating the Airwaves for Peaceful and Credible Elections 2024,” George Sarpong, the Executive Secretary for NMC, emphasized the pivotal role that the media watch app is expected to play. He articulated that the app will serve as a vital tool in promoting peaceful elections by offering real-time, accurate information from polling stations across Ghana.

Sarpong further highlighted the app's potential to verify the authenticity of electoral results by enabling individuals present at polling stations to capture and submit footage for verification. This capability is poised to provide efficient and reliable evidence in the event of any disputes or challenges related to election incidents, ultimately fostering greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

As the NMC prepares to roll out this innovative media watch app, it underscores the organization's commitment to upholding journalistic integrity, combating misinformation, and safeguarding the democratic principles upon which free and fair elections are built. With its potential to significantly impact the landscape of media monitoring and reporting, the app represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to ensure credible and peaceful electoral outcomes.

In conclusion, the forthcoming launch of the media watch app by the National Media Commission signals a proactive and forward-thinking approach to addressing misinformation and disinformation in the context of Ghana's upcoming general elections. By harnessing the power of technology, this initiative holds promise in promoting transparency, enhancing accountability, and contributing to the overall integrity of the electoral process.
