The Wenchi Methodist Hospital in Ghana's Bono Region has announced plans for a mass burial of 28 unclaimed and unidentified bodies currently residing in its morgue. These bodies have remained unclaimed for nearly three years, causing significant congestion and hindering the hospital's operations.
A press statement released by Wenchi Municipal Coordinating Director, Jimah Yakubu, highlighted the urgent need for the mass burial. The statement cited both operational difficulties caused by the overflowing morgue and potential health risks associated with the prolonged storage of the deceased.
The hospital and the Wenchi Municipal Assembly's Environmental Health Unit have initiated the process for the burial. A public notice has been issued, urging families of missing persons to contact the hospital before Friday, January 31, 2025, for identification and collection of the bodies. The mass burial is scheduled to take place after this date, from Thursday, January 23rd to Friday, January 31st, 2025.
Authorities emphasized that several attempts to locate the families of the deceased have been unsuccessful. The mass burial is intended not only to alleviate the pressure on the hospital's mortuary but also to ensure a dignified burial for the unidentified individuals. The hospital appeals for public cooperation in identifying and claiming the bodies before the scheduled mass burial. The hope is that this action will prevent further congestion and potential health hazards while providing a respectful final resting place for the deceased.
