13 dead in fatal accident on Kumasi-Obuasi Highway

We are deeply saddened to report on a tragic accident that occurred at dawn today, Monday, October 14, 2024. A VIP bus, en route from Kumasi to Enchi in the Western North Region, veered off the road and plunged into a ditch near Kwapia, close to Obuasi.

According to police sources, the incident resulted in the loss of 13 lives, including seven males, five females, and a child, who were all passengers on board the bus. Regrettably, all but one of the deceased passengers lost their lives instantly at the scene. The driver, identified as Osei Adu, was rushed to the hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

This devastating accident has sent shock waves through the local community, as families mourn the loss of their loved ones. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the bus, with registration number ER 2445-11, was overloaded after picking up stranded passengers from another bus that had broken down on the route. It is believed that a confrontation among some aggrieved passengers regarding the bus’s overloaded condition may have distracted the driver, ultimately contributing to the tragic accident.

In the aftermath of the incident, those injured in the crash are currently receiving medical treatment. Additionally, the police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue as authorities work diligently to gather more information and provide support to the affected families.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this heartbreaking event. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
