Our prayer is that God will touch the hearts of the people – Catholic Bishop

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious and Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, has launched an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey. This significant initiative is designed to shed light on the detrimental effects of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, and to urge the government to take prompt action to address this pressing issue.

The main objective of the protest is to advocate for a state of emergency with regards to mining activities, particularly in areas surrounding water bodies, river buffers, and forest reserves. The National President for Peace Justice and Creation of the Catholic Church of Ghana, Father Nicolas Azzineh, emphasized the hope that through prayer, hearts and minds will be touched, leading to a shift in perspective towards the preservation of nature.

The Bishops have underscored the shared responsibility of Catholics and all Ghanaians in safeguarding the environment. They have articulated their moral obligation to protect God's creation and promote integral human development through tangible actions, rather than mere words. The Bishops have called upon Catholics, Christians, and all concerned Ghanaians to participate in what they have termed an "environmental prayer war against galamsey."

The primary focus of this initiative is to urge the government to declare a state of emergency in order to halt all forms of mining activities, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused and the subsequent rehabilitation of the land.

By raising awareness about the devastating effects of galamsey and advocating for governmental intervention, the Environmental Prayer Protest Walk aims to bring about positive change for the environment and the well-being of all Ghanaians.
