NRSA engages political parties on road safety ahead of December polls

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has taken proactive steps to address the surge in road accidents during election years by engaging with all political parties ahead of the December elections.

In a recent interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS), Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the NRSA’s public relations officer (PRO), disclosed the authority's initiative. Sateckla highlighted that research has shown an increase in road crashes during election periods, prompting the NRSA to take action.

To combat this concerning trend, the NRSA conducted meetings with political parties and reviewed the existing road safety code. Additionally, the parties were encouraged to integrate road safety measures into their policies and manifestos.

Sateckla emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the impact of recklessness on the road and its toll on the voting public. As part of their commitment, political parties signed a pact pledging to prioritize road safety in their campaigns.

Moving forward, the NRSA plans to continue engaging with political parties at district, constituency, and regional levels to ensure that road safety remains a central theme in their political discourse.

"We are involving the political parties," Sateckla stated. "After the national program, we are going down to the districts, constituencies, and regions to still engage them so that road safety will become an integral part of their campaigns."

The NRSA's proactive approach in collaborating with political parties to prioritize road safety is a significant step towards reducing road accidents during election periods. By integrating road safety measures into their policies and manifestos, political parties can contribute to creating a safer environment for all road users. It is commendable to see such concerted efforts being made to address this critical issue.
