In a recent address to members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, emphasized the urgent need for the elimination of certain nuisance taxes introduced by the current government. Specifically, Mahama urged GUTA to press Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who also serves as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to take immediate action in eliminating these taxes rather than waiting until he is potentially elected President.
During his address, Mahama underscored the critical nature of the issue at hand and cautioned GUTA members against placing blind trust in assurances made by Dr. Bawumia regarding the abolition of various taxes, including the E-Levy, emissions tax, VAT on electricity, and the betting tax. Instead, Mahama urged GUTA to hold Dr. Bawumia accountable for his commitments and to demand action in the present rather than later.
It is noteworthy that Dr. Bawumia had previously outlined his plans to abolish these taxes in a public address regarding his presidential aspirations. However, Mahama's call to action suggests a sense of skepticism and a desire for tangible and immediate results.
"Tell Bawumia to eliminate the E-Levy and other taxes now, not later," emphasized Mahama during the meeting, highlighting the urgency of the matter at hand.
The issue of taxation and its impact on businesses and individuals is a crucial aspect of economic policy, and it is clear that Mahama is urging proactive measures to alleviate the burden of these nuisance taxes on the business community.
As the dialogue between political leaders and business associations continues, it remains to be seen how Dr. Bawumia and the current government will respond to these calls for immediate action on tax reforms. The outcome of this discourse will undoubtedly have implications for businesses and the broader economic landscape in Ghana.
