The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has demonstrated its commitment to the socio-economic development of the Banda District in the Bono Region by providing substantial financial assistance to yam and groundnut farmers in the vicinity of the Bui Generating Station. The total financial support extended amounts to GHC442,480 and is part of the implementation of Phase Two of the Authority’s flagship Livelihood Enhancement Programme (LEP), which was initiated in 2019.
A total of 160 farmers, identified as Project Affected Persons (PAPs) of the Bui Dam residing at the Resettlement Community within the dam’s enclave, have been the beneficiaries of this financial package. The aim is to bolster their socio-economic livelihoods and mitigate the challenges they face.
Mr. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, the Chief Executive Officer of BPA, emphasized the Authority’s dedication to improving the well-being of the local populace and expressed a keen interest in alleviating their plight. He underscored the lucrative nature of agriculture and urged the yam and groundnut farmers to diligently pursue their work, assuring them of continued support from the Authority to maintain and expand their farming activities. Mr. Dzamesi also stressed the importance of discipline and hard work for the farmers to achieve self-reliance and prosperity.
Mr. Eric Acheampong, the Deputy Director of Human and Natural Resource at BPA, acknowledged that Phase One of the LEP encountered challenges, leading to its suspension for assessments aimed at addressing these issues in the interest of the PAPs. He reported that both Phase One and Phase Two have positively impacted around 660 PAPs out of the targeted 816, indicating significant progress in improving the socio-economic livelihoods of the locals.
Agriculture being a predominant activity in the Bui enclave, BPA has established the Agricultural Modernization Module, also known as the BPA LEP 2 Irrigation Farming Module, to strategically invest in the farming endeavors of the PAPs. This initiative aims to empower eligible PAPs as independent entities by providing them with necessary tools and personal protective equipment.
Nana Kwadwo Wuo II, the Chief of Bui, expressed appreciation for BPA’s efforts in enhancing health, education, sports, and the overall socio-economic well-being of the community. He emphasized the importance of further initiatives to engage unemployed youth in productive activities for their betterment.
Mr. Maxwell Gbadagbo, a yam farmer and spokesman for the beneficiaries, lauded BPA for their support and encouraged fellow farmers to invest the funds in their farms to enhance their income. Additionally, Madam Judith Nsiah, a groundnut farmer, appealed to the Authority for assistance in securing ready markets and favorable prices for their produce.
The Bui Power Authority's proactive measures and tangible support for local farmers reflect a commendable commitment to fostering sustainable development and improving livelihoods in the region. As the Livelihood Enhancement Programme continues to unfold, it is anticipated that these initiatives will yield lasting benefits for the community at large.
