African Games volunteers to receive 1k allowance, two hundred as T&T

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the African Games has recently made a decision to compensate volunteers who participated in the just-ended African Games held in Accra. Following protests by the volunteers regarding allegedly unpaid stipends promised to them by the organizers, the LOC has announced that each volunteer will receive an allowance of GHS1,000.00.

Reports surfaced that some volunteers resorted to holding the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, hostage at the University of Ghana Stadium due to the delay in receiving their compensations. Dalali Awutey, a member of the Volunteers LOC Sub-committee, expressed surprise at the handling of the issue by the volunteers, stating that there could have been a more amicable approach to addressing the matter.

Mr. Awutey acknowledged the efforts and dedication of the volunteers during the games, despite the absence of a specific commitment to compensation in the initial communication.

Subsequently, a meeting between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organizing Committee resulted in a resolution to provide volunteers with a thousand cedis allowance and two hundred cedis for Travel and Transport (T&T). The LOC has issued a statement requesting volunteers to confirm their status by Monday in order to facilitate the payment process.

Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, emphasized the importance of volunteers cooperating with the Volunteers Sub-committee's management to validate their details for payment by the specified deadline.

The decision to compensate volunteers demonstrates an acknowledgment of their valuable contribution to the success of the African Games. It is essential for all parties involved to work together to ensure a smooth and efficient process for disbursing the allowances to the deserving volunteers.
